Yordan Sbirkov graduated in Cancer Biology and Immunology at the University of Bristol, England (2011). His PhD thesis was on epigenetics and induction of cell differentiation in acute myeloid leukemia at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, England (2016).

After a short post-doc at the University of Würzburg, Germany (2017), he joined the Department of Medical Biology. He successfully compleated training courses in tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting (at CTIBiotech, Lyon, France). He received a speciality in medical biology.

His research interests are related to the development and validation of 3D bioprinted models of colorectal cancer, test chemotherapeutics in a 3D microenvironment that is closer to the physiological conditions. His current work also includes the bioengineering of cartilage tissue with application in regenerative medicine. In addition, chief Sbirkov also has interests in the field of cellular metabolism and resistance to glucocorticosteroids and other chemotherapeutic agents in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
