Prof. Nikolay Boyadjiev, MD, PhD

Prof. Nikolay Boyadjiev graduated in Medicine with excellent results and a gold medal. His scientific interests during his studies were in the field of medical genetics, in which subject were also his first appearances at scientific forums and scientific publications. Immediately after completing his higher education, after winning a competition, he began working as an assistant at the Department of Physiology at the Medical University Plovdiv, where he taught physiology and sports medicine.
He holds a number of specializations - at the University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa), where he was a PhD student, at Glasgow University (Glasgow, Scotland), University College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland) and Trinity College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland). Since 2010, he has a Master's degree in Health Management. He is a graduated specialist in Physiology and in Sports Medicine. Since 2001, he has been an Associate Professor, and since 2014 he has held the academic position of Full Professor in the Department of Physiology of Plovdiv Medical University.
Prof. Boyadjiev gives full lecture courses in Physiology not only at the Medical University - Plovdiv, but also at the Technical University - Plovdiv, the University of Food Technology - Plovdiv, as well as at King's College London, University of London. Delivers lecture courses on Sports Physiology and Sports Medicine, incl. and in the National Sports Academy - Sofia.
He is a lecturer at a number of foreign universities, incl. in Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (Gwalior, India), Democritus University of Thrace (Alexandroupolis, Greece), Trakya University (Edirne, Turkey), etc.
From 2004 to 2024, he was the head the Department of Physiology at the Medical University - Plovdiv, and for two terms (2011-2019) he was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University - Plovdiv. In 2024, he was elected Chair of the Board of the Research Institute at Plovdiv Medical University.
He is also the Chairman of the State Examination Commission for the specialty in Medical Physiology and a member of the State Examination Commission for the specialty in Sports Medicine.
His scientific interests are focused on studying changes in metabolism in various diseases (sepsis, metabolic syndrome, kidney and liver failure, etc.) and in extreme conditions of the body, as well as the possibilities for their nutritional compensation. Prof. Boyadjiev studies the adaptive changes occurring in the body during different types of physical workload and the effects of the use and abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids in sports, as well as the effects of the use of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARM) in sports.
He has more than 150 scientific publications, cited over 500 times, as well as a number of inventions and patents. He is the author, co-author and editor of more than 20 textbooks and manuals in Bulgarian and English, with one of the textbooks being used for training in a Master's Program under the guidance of King's College London in 10 countries around the world.
In 2023, he introduced and now he directs the innovative Master's Program "Sports Physiology, Sports Cardiology and Sports Traumatology" at Plovdiv Medical University, accredited by the National Agency for Assessment and Accreditation in the "Medicine" Education Field.
He leads and participates in a number of National and International research and educational projects. He is the author of the monographic work Muscular work and adaptation of the body to physical workload. He is the co-author of the monograph Outdoor Recreation. Physiological and Psychological Effects on Health (Edited by Hilde G. Nielsen, London 2021).
He is the scientific supervisor of a number of doctoral and graduate students.
For two terms, he was a member of the Specialized Council for Food and Biotechnologies at the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Bulgaria. He is a member of the European College of Sports Sciences, the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Physiological Sciences, the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Sports Medicine and is one of the founders of the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Anthropology. He is a member of the Editorial board of a number of International journals and publishers such as International Journal of Fitness, Journal of Applied Sports Sciences, IntechOpen Books, etc.
In his practical work, Prof. Boyadjiev performs the functions of a medical consultant for the Bulgarian Athletics Federation, a number of National and International sports federations, as well as the National weightlifting teams of Colombia and Peru. He was also a member of the medical and anti-doping commissions of a number of Bulgarian sports federations.
In 2012, he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Bulgarian Medical Association.
He is fluent in English, French and Russian - written and spoken.
